SCOPE:
- The Assistant Teacher will be part of the Early Childhood Center team that includes six classrooms and 18 teachers, serving 89 children.
- Assistant Teachers: We have two full time, union positions available. These teachers are responsible for supporting classroom teachers, providing care, lunch and meeting coverage, and escorting children to and from enrichment classes. The hours for this position are 9:00AM-6:00PM and include teaching in our after care program.
- All teachers work directly with our Operations Manager and Early Childhood Center Director to create a warm, loving and creative first school experience that nurtures families and prepares children for elementary school.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Support our teaching team by working with children ages 2 to 5 years old. Candidates must genuinely enjoy being with young children and have an interest in getting to know them well. Teacher responsibilities include:
- Helping to maintain a child-centered classroom environment that is inviting, loving, creative and clean.
- Planning a daily routine that includes play, outdoor time, messy play, art, cooking, singing, reading stories, offering snack and a gathering circle.
- Speaking to children with respect.
- Exhibiting curiosity about children and being joyful in the classroom.
- Being emotionally present to support children in their relationships, if they are unwell, and exhibiting empathy.
- Creating a safe environment.
- Exhibiting good judgement.
- Supervising children at all times, including snack times, rest periods, diapering/restroom times, play times, and activity times.
- Knowing all health and emergency policies of the program and being ready and willing to implement them if necessary.
- Helping with general housekeeping tasks.
- Maintaining appropriate communication with staff, children, and families at all times.
- Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Interacting with parents at pick up time, signing children out for the day.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING (Qualifications)
Must-Haves:
- High School diploma and child care experience; progress towards a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field is a plus.
- Ability to build warm relationships with children and families.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and reflective teaching skills.
- Nice-to-Haves: Passion for music, movement, arts, gardening, cooking or other interests to share with children.
SALARY & COMPENSATION:

Salary: $22-24/hr (contingent on education) with benefits including membership at the Riverdale YM-YWHA.
